I am wondering if someone can recommend some decent brass for reloading the 44-40.

I have some older RP brass that works great, currently cannot find any Remington Brass in stock. So I picked up 50 Winchester brass, this stuff is junk right out of the bag, I had to straighten most of the case mouths before I could even FL size them, and the walls are terribly thin. They do not load well with my cast bullets at all.

I have been using the Starline brass for 41LC and 44 Russian and have been pleased. I was wondering is anyone has experience with this or any other good brass for the 44-40 ?

Thanks

Jeff

I reload R-P, Winchester, and Starline .44-40 brass with no noticeable difference.
I use a .430 expander to set the depth of the bullet when I compress the black powder.
I also use a Lee Factory Crimp Die as I use the same loading for rifle and pistol.
Winchester is the thinnest of the 3 types of brass.
At the web site “ http://www.cascity.com/forumhall/ “ there is considerable discussion on the .44-40 cartridge under the 2 reloading topics and the Henry and Winchester 73 topics.

I have made good .44-40 cases from .303 British brass. The Handloader's Manual of Cartridge Conversions says to turn the rim to .525 diameter but I found that in my rifle (an old SXS combination gun) I didn't have to.
