Fresh off the press, literally ! I've had this reloader for years and never done anything with it so figured it's about time. Had a good friend show me the ropes and all went great. This loader I believe is dated to the 1960 or 1970s so it's an old timer and pretty collectable as well. Glad to be able to save some money with the high price of ammo these days and have fun at the same time.
Loaded up some 44-40 with a Lyman All American press, 17 grains of 5744 powder topped with 200 grain .430 dia XTP bullets

Nothing wrong with an older press. They last a long time if you look after them. My oldest press that I use is late 50’s or early 60’s. Old Herters double ram. Basically two presses in one. My Lyman powder measures are late 50’s and up to present.
I started loading 44-40 last year when I bought a Uberti revolving carbine. 200 gr cast with 5.8 grs of 700-x is what I settled on. A lot cheaper than buying factory loads. And guarantees you will always have ammunition instead of depending on a store having some when you want it.

A friend has been loading for me for a couple years so it's nice to be able to do it myself now. It's pretty hard to find the original shell holders for this loader but Lyman makes an adapter so picked it up and can now use modern holders. I have a few original ones but didn't have one for 44-40 but found one that works plus the adapter so if I ever get going on dif cals I'm good to go. I have an original 1st model 1873 rifle and 3rd model src, a 92 src and a Marlin 1889. Luckily for me they all seem to like that load so that's a bonus !

Nice to see the old Lyman press being put to use, I have a Lyman Tru-Line Jr. turret press that I use occasionally for various reloading chores. Sounds like a nice 44-40 collection, especially the 1889. I've always wanted one.

Cheaper and also easier on the barrels to run cast. RE#7 is safe in 73's and fills the case like BP ,it's what I use in my 92. Starline and Win brass is thinnest at the neck and will accommodate larger diameter bullets than Remington will. I get clover leafs at 50 yards with irons. Have de-capped a couple grouse .....no deer yet.
