44-40 shot shells

If anyone could do it or did it, it was Ken Waters.

He did many a write up and one I recall is he used three balls in the Remington 444 and the reults where pretty and impressive,

Pretty sure the ones I have are 7 or 8 shot, and if the perform anything like 22 shot cartridges, then they are probably better than nothing, except that if you had nothing, you would have an actual accurate set of expectations, whereas if you had a bunch of the shot cartridges, and had not tried them, you would expect them to be good for something, and...you'd be disappointed.

Well I have close too fifty of them.. I am sure the few that are missing from the box convinced them too just save the 47 that are left .. there is nothing on the box that indicates .. # 6 .or #7 or what ever .. Just shotshells ... But after doing the google thingy I found Iver johnson made single shot smothbore shotguns cambered for 44-40 shot shells .. Just like a 410 smothbore but was marked as 44-40 WCF

Marbles Game Getter as well could use shot or ball.Shot would be handy for snakes or pigeons in the rafters of a shed or barn..Annie Oakley used a smooth bore 44-40/with shot for exhibition shooting with Buffalo Bill traveling show.

As well Speer #10 has data for a 120gr ball load in the .44 Special and shot loads using Speer shot capsules and # 7.5,8 + 9 shot .Running around 1000fps. If available they could be reduced to be safe in a .44-40 1892 or the like.

I used them a little many years ago in a Winchester M92. Don't know if I ever knew or even thought about shot size but the effective range was in feet, not yards. As mentioned, good for indoor ( barn, shed) pest control without the worry of putting holes in roofs, walls, etc. They certainly were used for very close range trick shooting and still would work for balloons, etc. I seem to remember that they leaded the bore - real quick.

I do the same with 45/70 and three balls. About 12gr of Unique and crimp on the top one. They don't spread out as much as I thought they would.

Mike, Speer makes or made a plastic cap that is filled with the lead shot of your choice (6 or 7 shot) and thus the rifle became a rifle shot gun.
I have never experimented with that , but only read what Ken Waters played with in his career.
Look forward to what you find out and hopefully able to share results when you being experimenting.
Tight Groups,
Rob

This is the first ive heard of his work, I also have been loading something similar, slighty modified 303 cases with 7 1/2, buck shot and combinations of the two in my 44 since the 70's. Sounds like a good read, I know it wasn't directed to me but thanks for the recommendation.

Well got out today .. was not impressed at all with these shot shells //// seems too be 7 1/2 ... Five yards and an 18 inch pattern ,, nine yards and a 24 inch pattern .. twenty yards and the pattern is so big you can not measure it ,,I think it would work good for snakes ; and i think this was the purpose anyway because you would be five yards or closer
