a buddy mentioned using 44 mag in a 410 shottie.
is it possible? By possible I mean doable in a reasonable safe conditions.
would you recommend it?

my 410 is a skinny backpacker with 12" bbl

I think the pressure from a 44 magnum is far too much for a .410 action, you might get away with using a 44/40, but its probably not much better than a .410 slug.I did a seach with google, this is what I found. "Let me repeat, NEVER TRY THIS WITH A STANDARD .44 MAGNUM! The standard .44 magnum cartridges with bullets are loaded to pressures approximately three times as high as .410 proof pressures. In addition, the .44 magnum bullet is approximately .430 inches in diameter. It will freely travel approximately two inches before abruptly hitting a .410 barrel still backed by about 40,000 pounds of chamber pressure. Bad things should be expected to happen. Very bad things. Don't do it."

Lets see a .429 " dia bullet being pushed through a bore that is .410" dia and inside a chamber that most likely has a working pressure of under 30000lbs.
DO NOT DO IT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!, unless you have your estate all in order and I am named as the main beneficiary.
If you need to screw around with near death experiences why not try something a little closer in dimension, like maybe 41 Rem Mag?? At least the bullets are .410" dia, so you stand a far less chance of killing yourself and giving the gun culture ANOTHER reason to be maligned.

AMEN ATR, AMEN

it was not my intention to try it.
more like calling my buddy's bluff. I've seen 44 mag barells and the thickness does not come to the paper thin 410 bbls I've handled.

thank you for the clarification.

I've heard of people firing .410 shells out of a 45/70 or a 444 marlin, this might be a safer way to go if you want a duel use rifle / shotgun.

This is getting scary! Is there something wrong with shooting what the firearm is designed to shoot? I realize that this can deprive some lawyers of their frivilous law suits from the unnecessary injuries this kind of madness results in, but?

Funny this topic came up. I watched this thread for a couple of days and posted a thread similar at thehighroad.org about what I heard. A 45lc in a 410, in the shotgun section. The replies are similar. Great minds think alike. Just kidding. Safe shooting.

Sorry everyone , I seem to owe an apology for having incorrect information. I have apparently placed erronious information on a site where someone accepts everything they read as 100%correct , I am to be chastised for not knowing I was in error and pause to wonder how I have been lucky enough to have survived with this wrong information in my head without having you guys around to correct me .

Long live discussion and constructive critizem, let alone helpful and intelligent teaching.

I think it would be better served with the 45LC . Aren't some derringers set up as 45LC/.410 ??

Well there you have it. All you need find is a shotgun with 45Colt/.410 on the barrel and you are good to go. Just make sure it is marked as such, this would indicate the firearm has been tested for this application.

I know T/C makes pistol barrels as such. Maybe they make a longer version.

Shortround You are CORRECT in the Derringer thing, my apologies. The way they are getting around the projectile diameter difference is in the barrel being very little longer than the 410 round. I just mic,ed a 410 and the outside of the hull is about .457 . How they get the 2 different rim diameters to extract eludes me though. I still do not suggest it safe or smart to try 45lc in a 410 shotgun.
