A friend bought a 44 mag marlin 94 to carry in case of bear and wild boar. Does anyone know what ammunition is good for this combo? He is thinking along the lines of 300gr hornady xtp in either handloaded or factory. Real world experience is quite preferable if you have it.

Next question, anyone know where to get the ammo they suggest?

But he may need to do a bit of work on his rifle to get them to fit. Freebore most likely ;)

Import them via PR or IRG

^ I bet you the garrett cartridge is too long for this action.

Will need a Winchester M94 and stick with the 310 gr weight as maximum.

my 2 bits only

Iraqveteran888 just posted a video on a henry mare's leg in 44 mag. With regular Federal eagle 240 gr. jsp it penetrated 27 inch in ballistic gel, three inches more than the full size rifle!

So with the game encounter here ( with exeption of grizz.) a regular hunting jsp should be more than enough if range is kept reasonnable...

I like the fed american eagle option. this is for just in case, when actually hunting said critters there is a 35 whelen and the likes available! The garrett cartridge is a good idea, but modifying the firearm and still having the murphys law rules to consider make it prohibitive!

If I needed bear defence I'd probably use some of my 310gr gas-checked powder-coated bullets pushed by a load of H110 or Win296 (same powder). I read a lot of comments that the Marlin 94's wont stabilize a 300+gr bullet but mine does decently well (not laser accurate but can hit minute-of-vitals at 100yds). Only works when pushed fast though; moderate to light loads and the bullets start to tumble and keyhole. They aren't +P loads or anything but are about half-way to max load data. I'm using data for a 300gr XTP bullet meant for a revolver but am using a 310gr bullets in a rifle. OAL is just to the crimp-groove on the Lee cast bullet.

I only mention this because OP mentioned that his friend may be setup for reloading. I'm not sure where to buy 300-310gr cast bullets with gas checks and powder coating (the powder coating prevents leading in the Micro-Groove barrel) so maybe it's not that much help.
