Loooing for a new lever gun for deer, shots will be fairly close as I will be using this rifle while dogging and running hounds. I have used 30-30 before but am looking for a different caliber

I'd bet by the end of the season out of the two you'd pick the 44 mag.
Sure glad the .357 wasn't in there.............................................................

Smoked a big doe at 70yds with a Ruger M77/44 using 265gr bullet. Dropped her with a frontal chest shot. Got no problems with it inside of 100yds. 444 or 45/70 will also do the job.

I had a 45-70 and sold it, now I have a 44mag winchester 92 and love it. Wonderful to carry and not obnoxious to shoot with full house loads. As an added bonus it is a snap to load for on my progressive press so lots of practise is easy and affordable.

I've owned both and they are equally fun and more than adequate for most hunting situations...but there is something to be said for those 45-70 thumpers.
As far as handling and ease to carry, my Marlin 1895G is small, light, and solid...not a lot of difference in that manner to the Browning B92 .44mag that I owned.
