Playing with a Ruger 96 44 mag
First choice loads were the loads I used in a S&W 29 , 21 gr of 4227 under a 240 gr boolitt from Bullet Barn
iirc fps about 1200 in the 29, 1500 in the 96
Okay for just banging, but then tried to test accuracy so mounted a scope
Tests showed pattern of about 2.5 " @ 100, slightly underwhelming but had never really tested the rifle for potential
So next round of shooting was through a chrony with another load along, factory Federal jacketed softpoint
Instant improvement, speeds up over 1700 and tightened into near 1" group, about 2" higher on paper
- Anyone else use their same loads for handgun and rifle?
- What speed to push the hardcast through a rifle for best accuracy?
2.5" is still a reasonable hunting load for this gun, realizing limitations, and 1500 with 240 gr should get it done
Glad to realize the potential but I think my stock of loads will last a long time , now that the S&W is gone to a new home
