Hey guys , just wondering what kind of range and impact a 44 winchester lever would do on a moose, a buddy of mine offered it up to me to use, where im hunting, shots will be no more than 75m -100m,he has 300 gr solid lead bullets and 220 gr hollow points
Just curious??

I agree with Amphib...so long as your Province doesn't have a minimum cartridge length regulation that would exclude the 44. I believe Alberta has a reg like that and where there's one, there's sure to be another.

Perfectly adequate, but maybe not legal. Gotta love the way some things get done!

I haven't dug into it, but there were a few articles in the magazines a while back that compared the terminal ballistics to the 30-30 in a pretty favorable light.

Lot's of moose as well as deer have been whacked by the 30-30 Winchester over the years.

Big bullet, moving slow... :)

Sorta like black powder init?

Cheers

Your borrowing a rifle because you don't have a better option? Definately better choices than 44 mag. for moose, including 30-30. Especially if your not very familiar with that gun and cartridge. I have shot three rather small blacktails in the lungs broadside with the 44 and all managed to run for a bit before keeling over. I fear a resiliant animal 7x plus that size may be lost in bush country.

30-30 is an amazingly good penetrater. I have killed a moose with one.

I've killed more than a few deer with a very old 44-40 and deer, moose and bear with the 44 mag using 240 grain cast lead bullets. No problems out to 100 yards ! Hit in the heart/lung area, most animals will go 40 yards or so before they pile up, and occassionally a little further. But a solid hit, you should have a good blood trail and a dead deer/moose/bear not too far
away ! Never lost one !

I used to shoot a 44 mag ruger auto and took a few moose and a caribou all with 240 gr soft points. Longest shot just over 150 yds with no problems. Remington bulk bullets do exceptionally well on large game.

I know two guys in the Yukon who hunted black bear, grizzly, caribou and moose with .44 magnum carbines, both using 240gr hollowpoints. One had a Ruger semi, and one a Browning lever action. They stuck to 150 yard range limits, were practised with their rifles, and had no problems.

I hunt almost exlusively with the .44 mags. I have 5 of them :D
Now dont get me wrong, there are other cartridges that will work better for longer ranges (I shoot a 7mm-08 for deer past 150, and a 300 RUM for long shots on donkkeys) but up close I LOVE the .44 mag. I have taken pretty much everything with a .44 240gr JSP, and with good shot placement I'm convinced they do a better job than the 7/08 shooting 140 TSX's at close range. Did a 119 yard shot on a big blackie last year that was a bang-flop. I do prefer a semi however...after a bunch of practice, I can now effectively double-tap with my ruger carbines....the only thing better than a .44 caliber hole in the vitals of a big animal is TWO .44 holes iin the vitals of a big animal ;)
