44 magnum

The Ruger is built to handle +P+ loads. If you are an experienced reloader and want to ramp it up, you can do it with the Redhawk. There is basically only 1 brand of really heavy duty factory 44 ammo (Buffalo Bore 340gr) that we have access to in Canada that would not be suitable for the Smith...

It's nice to have the option, I like to finish off a range day with some of this stuff for poops 'n giggles. They did force me to abandon the stock wood grips for a set of Pachmayr Decelerator's though LOL....stuff packs a serious wallop!

Yup that is some serious power Bill D. I have to admit that while i have never been a fan of the Pachmayr Decelerator's, they do work well for the heavy stuff. Great pic as usual!

Yes they're ugly but they work - getting too old for looks now, prefer comfort LOL. And thanks :)

The S&W magnum hunter performance is a great revolver. More accurate then I am. Although truth be told Rugers are awesome as well, cant go wrong with either if ou ask me.

Yes for grips with powerful guns, it is not about how they feel when you hold the gun, its about how they feel when you shoot the gun.

Did you snap up the '4" but restricted' 657 that popped up not too long ago, TC?!

You know I did!! It is seriously nice in the hand, goodness sakes but I like it!! I already had a really nice Model 57 that I got with dies, brass, and 200 Hornady 210 gr XTP bullets, and really fell in love with the cartridge....and the Model 657 came with another 400 bullets to load (210 gr Nosler JHP) and dies, and 50 rounds of Federal ammo JHP....so I ordered more brass, and the 629 is going to sit for a while I'm thinking.

As a side note, the balance on the 657 is great, and the trigger.....mmmmmm! It would be one of the last revolvers in my cabinet if I ever started to downsize.

And hence the Pachs on my 4" Model 657....that gun is snappy! Has an entirely different recoil than my 629 with 6" barrel, quiet a bit sharper. I love the big muzzle flash when you shoot indoors haha.

Nice! I just missed it so glad it went to an another appreciative home. That was a great one-of-a-kind score. I'm a big fan of the 41 too. Wish factory ammo was more accessible for it. The N frame 57/657 is perfect for the 41, and that was such a sweet 4" package. Congrats.

First handgun I shot was my dad's 44mag S&W model 29 back when I was about 12. Fell in love with the cartridge that day. We put alot of rounds through that Smith and it never let us down. Sadly it was sold a few years before I got my RPAL.

I picked up a Super Blackhawk in 44mag 10.5" Stainless bbl off a fellow CGN'er last year and I love it. I've had a Blackhawk .45colt for about 8 years as well so I can vouch for the quality of the Ruger revolvers. As a few other members mentioned above, the Rugers are built like tanks and most rated for +P+ loads. I've been using a recipe for my .45colt for a few years that will put a factory 44mag round to shame. I've loaded up some hotloads for my 44mag as well but haven't had a chance to get to the range to try them out.

Thanks guys! I ordered a smith & Wesson 629 hunter! Also order 3 kinds of ammo. 240 gr jsp American Eagle, Sellier & bellot 240 gr jsp and 180 gr Remington jsp. I hear the Remington’s are big boomers at over 1600 FPS! We will see what is the most accurate? That’s what I’m after.

Congrats! should be fun. Let us know how she shoots with the different ammo.

Range days are toss up over the 29-2 or the 657. Luckily my case holds 4. Add a 22 for some softer on the hand plinking and the GP 100 to round it out and it's a good day.
