I finally got my carbide RCBS 44 Rem Mag dies, so I can load for my Marlin 1894 44RM.

I assume it has the 1-38 twist. I am loading 270gr Speer Gold dots, which should stabilize fine.

I have my eye on two bullets though which I am unsure of. Barnes 225 gr XPB and Barnes 300gr 'Buster'. Both are rated by Barnes for a 1-20 twist. The 225gr XPB is an all copper hollowpoint which is VERY long, and the 300gr Buster is a lead core, non expanding FMJ design.

Will they work in the 1-38 twist of my Marlin? Will the 20" barrel help stabilize them? I assume Barnes rates them for 1-20 twists but are thinking of pistols, rather than carbine rifles

any comments?

thanks

Rate of twist is irrelevent to barrel length. The rate of twist imparts the adequate amount of spin to stabilize a perscribe range of projectile length. This happens within the first few inches of bullet travel in the barrel.

You can buy a bit of twist underage with excess velocity but in a 44 mag carbine that is'nt gonna happen.

Stick with bullets perscribed for the twist rate in your rifle 265-270gr. jacketed bullets are as big as you will ever need in a 44 mag carbine. No need for guci this that or the other thing any bullet designed to hold together for 1800 to 2000fps impact velocities will do fine.

You can actually run too tough of a bullet in the 44 mag, especially if they are desinged to be run through the 444 Marlin.

Watch the design parameters on your bullets.

i use a 240gr hp for my rifle loaded with 17.0 grs of blue dot ( rifle data). the deer i have dropped with it never new what hit them.

I use 325gr. cast flat pts. with heavy charges of H-110 out of my Marlin without problems except for anything on the receiving end.
