 Hey all,
Excuse my "ignance" but what is the deal with this cartridge. My buddy was left one by his recently deceased uncle. The cartridge looks like a pistol round, real short and fat. Is this rifle a "carbine"? The rifle looks like any other magnum rifle but holy crap is the round small. The casing is close to the same length as the bullet. What gives?
Does anyone have this calibre or is there anyone with the time to explain what's up with this cartridge? Thanks guys!

The .44 Magnum is a pistol round, developed in 1956. It is basically a lengenthed .44 Special. Several rifles have been produced in this caliber by manufacturers like Browning, Ruger, Marlin and Winchester. Most of them are carbines, that is rifles with relatively short barrels. They are effective on deer and black bear out to about 100 yards or so. I think one fellow on CGN even shot a moose with one last year.

It is a revolver round but there's also a few carbines/rifles chambered for it as well. It's the same 44 Magnum that Dirty Harry uses. I have a Ruger semi auto carbine in 44 Rem Mag, it's a pretty fun gun.

So would it be big enough for a nasty mean grizzly bear @ close range?

An icepick would work on a nasty mean grizz @ close range if you do it right. But it's not exactly optimal. Same w/44mag. Better than nothing, but not exactly optimal.
