have been looking at these since seeing one at the 1976 Saskatoon Gun Show. I finally found a good price on one and it is in the mail as we speak. I know it's not a super refined arm but I figure it will make a good family rifle for canoe trips into bear country. Short, light and recoilless enough to be shot by the entire family except maybe my 5 year old!

Any experience with these?

I have the bolt Ruger 77/44 and I say it is a fine rifle. Super light and decent accuracy. I haven't used it on deer yet (only gophers!) and I believe it would do just great on deer or bear.
:D

I really like mine for the Deer hunt in Ontario. Nice and light, easy to carry. The only thing I really don't like about it is the curved metal butt plate. It can be murder on the shoulder for extended range use. It has more punch than I thought it would. Doesn't really bother me when I am hunting though:D Another thing, take your time taking it apart for detailed cleaning. Ruger has a decent breakdown on their website how to put it back together, it was a bit of a pain the first couple of times, but I now have the hang of it.

I picked one up last summer, old tube feed style, nice handy little rifle, carries like a 30 carbine but shoots bullets twice the weight.whats not to like

I had one for awhile (not sure why I sold it) and it was fantastic! Mine was one of the very early original ones still marked "Deerstalker". It was 100% reliable, and very accurate with Winchester "white box" 240 grain JHP loads. :) Besides, it felt like a .22 rifle - so easy and light to carry.

I bet you'll really enjoy yours. ;)

Yes Ruger reintroduced one that was modeled after the Mini-14 and used a rotary magazine. It was discontinued recently.

The one I bought is the older model with a tube magazine and modeled more on the lines of a 10-22

Just like the one I had...you will love it. ;)

I had one of the deerstalkers and it was a good shooting gun. It had a Williams peep sight and would shoot a very respectable group at 100 yards. The trajectory isn't particularly flat, so you have to be careful not to get fooled by the distance. Oh well, at least its a clean miss when you aim for the heart it the bullet hits the dirt beneath the deer.

Seems to be in the realm of $350-500.00 depending on condition. At 500.00 they don't seem to move very fast. Pristine in the box might go higher.

A fairly extensive search of the internet seems to suggest that the older Rugers at times develop a crack in the trigger housing which is near impossible to repair without replacement and replacement parts are nearly "nonobtanium". Something to look at if you buy one and I'll look mine over carefully when it arrives.

One of the 3 - 44's I've had, the others were a Marlin 1894 and a re-chambered Model 1892 Winchester. Very adequate for deer in Ontario,
and took a couple of moose and black bear as well.

Ruger no longer makes the 44 Mag in either the auto or lever.

IIRC, Epps carried a rubber recoil pad replacement that precisely fits the spaces vacated by the curved butt plate of the Ruger
44.

Scrounged 25 rounds of ammo and took it out today. Getting 2" groups at 50 yards and it goes bang every time. Lot's of fun to shoot, lot's of fire power for the size.

If I can get a folding stock to fit it I'll be laughing.
