44 S&W American

Long, long obsolete.

Cartridges of the World by Barnes say you can shorten and resize .44 Special but gives no details.

The Handloader's Manual of Cartridge Conversions by Donnelly is a bit more detailed but says .41 Magnum. PM me with email address if you want details.

Bullets would be a challenge.

I found the brass, dies and mold at Buffalo arms they are shipped to my daughter in Tennassee and will be redirected to me as Buffalo arms cannot ship brass over the line. Thanks to all for the info

"...will be redirected to me as Buffalo Arms cannot..." Your daughter can't legally export components without the U.S. export permit either.

The .44 American uses a heel-based, or reduced diameter shank bullet. The .44 Russian was derived from the American when the Czar of Russia ordered Smith and Wesson revolvers but specified the bullet to carry the lube inside the case. Thus reducing the bullet diameter to the .429" that we all know and love. Not sure if you have to trim Russian brass though.
