i've been doing a little reading on the internet. seems some writers are into the old 44 spcl. anybody have any experience with this cartridge: likes/dislikes? how about the old 45 colt?

cheers

the reason the writers are into the 44 spcl is beacuse it still chambers in the 44 mag and doesn't bounce so bad- same thing as firing the 38 spcl in the 357 mag- you get more bangs for your buck and it's not so hard on your hand- plus there's smaller frames out there for the spcl (charter arms bulldog comes to mind) if you want to go that route- as for the 45 colt, well, who doesn't like it- big holes, decent sized gun, and it's been around for ever- loaded up proper, it gives away nothing to the 44 mag

A lot of folks figure the 44 Special is a more accurate cartridge then the 44 Mag, maybe because it kicks less, I'm not sure. I own three of them (Colt SAA, S&W 624, and a Charter Arms Bulldog), and quite like it. Cost of reloading is less then the 44 Mag, and the last time I bought some, factory ammo was cheaper, so I don't know how anyone can figure it's a more expensive proposition. They do recoil less then the magnums, and the revolvers they are chambered in are usually lighter and balance a tad better, important issues for folks that carry and shoot a lot. I guess it's more of an aficionado's revolver then the magnum is. FWIW - dan

This is my 3rd Model Hand Ejector in 44 Special and it is a joy to carry and shoot. As a matter of fact, I am on my way to the range with it right after work today. Regards, Richard :D

Smith & Wesson N-frame revolvers and the .44 Special are a match made in heaven. Most accurate revolvers that I have owned--easy to re-load for--at any power level you and your particular revolver can take. If I could only have one--I would keep my 4" model 24.

I have a .44 Magum Ruger Vaquero that I use .44 Specials in. It cost's the same to reload either .44 mags or specials for Cowboy Action shooting. Very nice shooting piece, brass is almost as easy to find as magnum brass, same powder, same bullet and primer. Try it, you will like it.

On Monday I shot my 4" S&W M629-2 with 44 Mag target loads and 44 Special target loads. The 629-2 shot smaller groups with the 44 Special rounds. An interesting observation is that the 44 Mag rounds hit lower than the 44 Special rounds did. Regards, Richard :D
