.44 special for Cowboy Shooting?

Hello,

I have done a search for the best CAS calibers and the .38/.357 seems to be the favourite, followed by the .45.
Anyone shoot the .44 sp.? (more popular in the US!)
Besides the cost of ammo...what are the pros and cons?

Most people use 44 Spl only because they already have 44 Magnum handguns like Ruger Blackhawks for example. 44 Spl seems to work fine in a 92 chambered for 44 mag from my experience and I have also used them in a 94 as well. 44 Spl is a disadvantage because of the availability of brass, and if you need to borrow ammo at a match, less likely to find. Stick with 38/357 or 45 Colt.

If you want to shoot wildbunch as well, stick with the 45 Colt since you can't use the 38/357 rifle for Wildbunch (only 40 and up). Plus you can use the same bullets if you reload for your 45 ACP for the 1911 and for the 45 Colt Rifle, so that is a good thing.
 
I just can't bring myself telling them that they'll never see action just because they where born the wrong caliber and adopted on the wrong side of the border! LOL!

Well, get yourself a Puma 92 in 44 Mag and Bob is your uncle. The Winchester 94's are not as popular. I think you can use the 92 or 94 in Wildbunch too. There are kits to slicken up the Puma 92's, not sure about the 94's.

Here is something to look into though, I wonder if you could use 44-40 in your revolvers (not sure). Perhaps a gunsmith could tell you. Then you could get a 1873 rifle in 44-40 and be good to go.

As for the 44-40 no, you would need to fit a 44-40 cylinder...the brass is the length of a 44 mag and taper. Nice caliber though!:)

44 sp is a nice calibre. There are cowboy loads for it and if brass is a problem you could trim 44mag to the correct length. I believe most 44 mag rifles, Marlin and 92s, will shoot mag and special, just like 38-357. You have a lovely pair of Colts, use them.
 
I shoot .44 Special in my Vaqueros during the winter months, on indoor ranges and magnums during the summer. I haven't been to a large gun show or Wholesale Sports in the last 5 years, where .44 Special brass is not available. I use .44 Special in my 1906 mfg Winchester M92 but it is very sensitive to overall length issues, so I generally just use .44 mag brass in it.


By the way, beautiful setup for Cowboy action.
 
there's NO PROBLEM getting brass either- you just need 44 mag brass, and either a TRIM DIE or a PIPE CUTTER- those cheap 2 bucks will do the job- you just remove the 1/10th or 1/8th of an inch or whatever it is, and presto- 44 spcl- you wouldn't need any more than 200 rounds anyway

I started this game shooting 2nd gen 45 Colts. I went to Rugers in 357 when I realized I could not take enough 45 ammo on the plane to shoot a major match(Winter Range). Also bullets and brass are a whole lot cheaper, which makes for more practice. However I still drag out the Colts once in a while for a fun match, in my opinion,there is no way a Ruger can be slicked up like a Colt(Mine were done by Bob Munden), something about the way leaf springs work just make them feel smoother than coil springs. Shoot your Colts and enjoy them, but make sure that they are prperly timed or the way we shoot will soon wear them out!

Rugers will never have that 4 clicks music...:) and as for the timing, don't worry, Peter "RustyWood" is working on my .45 Cowboy Fast Draw Colt and he'll time my guns for CAS. Den Robinson and Bob Edmiston trust him so I guess I could too! :D:)

actually, rugers DO - it's that stupid transfer bar mod that takes that away- you get an UNMODDED blackhawk or an OLD ARMY , pull the hammer back, and you get the four- step
 
Personally I prefer 44's - 44 mag, 44 spl, 44 russian are all practically the same cartridge, just they're slightly longer or shorter. The russian is the oldest/shortest and the mag is the newest and longest.

Also, the mare's leg from Wanstals (comes in 38/357, 44 mag, 45lc) is a slick little number that's well worth it too. Not sure about mag capacity, but you could put a butt stock on them to get a little better aim too.
