hey guys. i just bought a Ruger 77/44 (bolt action carbine in .44 rem mag). Can I also shoot .44 special through this gun? Ive heard some people say yes, others say no. Anyone have any experience doing this, positive or negative? Any input will help.

thanks

What would be the point? 44 spec is harder to find, and just as expensive. If you reload you can load down a 44 mag to what you want. Difference in recoil in a rifle would be negligable

just be sure and clean it thoroughly to remove the "crud ring" that comes from using the shorter case- or use 44 special loadings in 44 mag cases- otherwise, your 44 mags won't chamber- given the PRICE of 44 specials these days ( unless you have a line on some cheap ones) you're better off using 44 mags

Usually as a rule of thumb, try matching the stamping on the barrel with
the case head stamp.
Life goes along soooooo much smoother this way.

This combination comes from the state police when they used revolvers. Carrying a 357 mag, one used to load 2/3 38 special shells with
the balance being 357 mag. This allowed 2/3 quick shot then mag shots. When 44 mag was carried, 44 special were used.

^ +1!

Tried to explain the whole 38/357 and 44 spec/mag (and others) to my niece. She understands the match your ammo to the data stamp, but had issues with "there are exceptions to this rule".

Sorry kiddo, some things aren't in the book .

here's a REAL easy way to look at it- suppose you have 2 men- both have 44 inch chests, one is 5'8 or so , the other 6'2- chances are the 6 footer will reach further and hit harder, but requires more energy - either that or put a special up against magnum and just observe the difference in case length and notice THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE in bullet diameter
