I have a .44mag dies so I can't load .44spls with it (I don't want to mess around with different brass anyways) But I was wondering if I can use .44mag brass and load to .44spl specs? I understand OAL will of course be longer, so how do I compensate for that? I’m using HS-6 and H110 powder for now, and the mildest I loaded so far was 13.5gr of HS-6 behind 200gr copper plated bullet (those are the bullets I will be using) So how low can I go? :)

Ps: I’d like to stick with HS-6 since I can also use it for 9mm, and with H110 there isn’t much you can do since it’s more of a 'go big or go home' stuff ;)

You can down load your HS-6 to special loads, but be careful about the H110. Apparently bad things can happen if you don't follow the 3% rule. (don't load below 3% of max)
I've loaded 44 Mag to special levels. I used W231 with 240 grn lead. Don't know the charge weight off hand, but I got about 850 fps. Nice light load to shoot.

(E)

You're pretty much in the bottom end as far as HS-6 loads and now you're at risk of squib loads.

I'd save that powder for the 9 and get a can of faster powder in the range between Unique and Norma R1 for a way more and cheaper shooting.

Don't use H110 for .44 Special-type loads.

If you want to make mild .44 Magnum loads, go look up special loads for cowboy action shooting. The loads there are like .44 Special, but for the .44 Magnum case. I've used Clays, Trail Boss and Universal Clays for light .44 Magnum loads and they all work well, especially Trail Boss.

You can also call Hodgons at 913-362-9455 . Ask to speak to one of the tech guys and tell them what u are looking for. They will most likely have a load for HS6 that is not published. If there is a problem with loading the 44Spl spec in a 44Mag case they will tell you, but u should be fine so long as u are within the boundaries of the components. You can also ask for their recipe list to be sent to you(email) for the 44Spl and 44Mag and they will send u the recipes for ALL their powders in that caliber with all the bullet weights they have tested:eek: . Best $2 phone call you will ever make..;)
Good luck
dB:)

on the Hodgon website they list 8 gr of HS-6 behind a 240gr bullet for .44spl loads, so I guess I should be fine with 10gr behind 200gr buller with a mag case.

Seriously, go get a pound of IMR Trail Boss. It's perfect for what you're doing. It was designed exactly for that kind of thing.

i've been using 6 grains of 231 behind a 240 lead swc in a ruger redhawk with xring results when i do my part- regular large pistol primers- 7.5 inch bbl- my speer 11 manual cautions against reduced loads of h110 and ww 296- your 44 mag dies are fine for doing 44 mag, you just can't go the other way which you would have been able to do had you bought specials- with the special you just load it a little long in the seater

Allrighty then...... what am I missing? Every common die set I have ever seen for the 44mag will load 44spl. Matter of fact, are they not all labled 44mag/44spl?

All I know is that Lee 44 mag dies are not supposed to load 44 Special, so I bought 44 Special dies and I load for both(44 Special dies do both). When my 44 Mag brass gets a little bit tired, I use a 44 Special case length gauge, and trim them down to 44 Special. Then you can use your 44 Special load data to the tee. With the cases 1/8" shorter, the loads and the velocities should be right on the money.:D
