45-70 3 ball Garrison load

I have always kept that in mind, the effort to push 3 balls or a ~450gr bullet down the barrel is very different. maybe only 1/4 or 1/8th the energy required? I could figure out bearing surface but there's still quite a few unknown variables.

I just know they really tear into things. I would love to know how fast they are going. I think... in the 1200-1400 range as a half educated guess?
 
I made up 20 3 ball loads tonight.

140gr each ball, 14 grains of unique, crimped in the middle of the 3rd ball. They feed through a marlin just fine... Quickload puts it at about 33k pressure if you believe the computer, but I have shot this load before and they worked fine without harming the cases at all.
 
Do you use any lube on the balls?

A good roll around in a tupperware with Lee Liquid Alox and a day or two to dry. Looks like it will be tuesday or wednesday morning before I get to test them. I have a big interview in Kamloops tomorrow and I am heading up right now.

Had about as good of a hunt this morning as you can without seeing any bucks too... Dammit. :)
 
It's funny to think of a 220gr bullet being extremely light. But I plink with 405's because all they have cost me so far is the gas or electricity to melt the lead, the mold that was kinda cheap and some lee alox :) Loaded with 15 gr of unique, they are as cheap to shoot as a handgun round.
 
I tried 14gr of Unique and 3 lubed balls at 50 yards today. They didn't group worth a damn out of my Guide Gun. I'll try a few rounds out of my H&R single shot on my next trip.

However, I did find another 'grouse load' for my Guide Gun. 14gr of Unique under a cut down 410 wad filled with 7.5 shot and enough room on top for a round ball crimped in place. More testing to follow. :D

what diameter were the balls?

A grouse load I have used in a few Marlin 1895's is 2 1/2" .410 shells, loaded thru the ejection port. I use sqibb loads with 350 gr. bullets for grouse, the shotshells I use for mice in camp.

I am using Hornady .457 round balls - I lubed them with Lee Alox.

What is your squib load? I've got some cast 350's to play with.
