My brother and my old buddy are coming out in November to hunt whitetails.
Due to the p.i.t.a. issue of hauling around a rifle, they are both going to borrow one of my rifles.

Art is gonna use my Marlin M1895 XLR, .45-70.

So I've been putzing around in the reloading room.

For the .45-70 I saw this load posted by Johnn Peterson and decided to try it: 39grs H4198 with 405gr jacketed bullets.
I loaded 5 each, Hawk 405gr RN .050" thick jacket, Remington 405gr FN and Woodleigh Weldcore 405gr FN.

For the record: Hawk 1588.5fps mv avg.
Remington 1510.9fpsmv avg.
Woodleigh 1567.6fps mv avg.

I load everything to factory length in any cartridge, and for straight wall cases like .45-70 I use the Lee Crimp Die.

All 3 'groups' were 4". Scope had not been ajusted prior to shooting these groups.

Not very good. I mulled around trying IMR-3031 or H335 but my fave .45-70 powder has always been H4895 so after consulting manuals plus my reloading log, I took an arbitrary powder weight 51.5grs H4895.
But only loaded 3 rounds each.

For the record: Hawk 1758.7fps mv avg.
Remington 1725.8fpsmv avg.
Woodleigh 1737.4fps mv avg.

After I fired the 3-shot group with the Hawk I adjusted the scope, then shot the Remington and Woodleigh groups in succession.

It's hard to see it, but the Remington group there's 2 bullets in the yellow, basically in 1 hole.

I use 40 of IMR 4198 with the Speer 400 or Remington 405 and I get MOA or under in any of my 1/2 dozen 45/70’s.

^ What are your velocities in multiple rifles?
What are the rifles? Are they all the same barrel length?
I'm hoping no one is stupid enough to answer your retarded question.......:(

You do realize the corrupt RCMP and other government b@g-lickers monitor this site, all the while keeping track of everyone's guns.

Remember that registration lead to confiscation! Do not list the guns you have on this site.

You are asking for trouble......:(

^ Thanks for the input.

If you have one load and it shoots MOA or Sub-MOA in multiple rifles, that's pretty remarkable, is basically what I was getting at. Not to call the other guy a fibber or anything like that.

I prefer Reloder 7 or IMR 4198 for my 45-70 (Marlin 1895G)
Also, I wouldn't worry too much about velocity, a 405 @ 1200 will punch through any deer.
I have loaded 450 gr hard cast over 13 gr unique, velocity was just over 1000 fps. I would not be afraid to hunt deer with that one either.

^ I wasn't seeking velocity, I would have been happy with 1500fps. But I kinda like that load I stumbled on.
I think I need to try another range session with to see if I can back it up.

Looking at your targets and considering typical 45-70 ranges <200y, your woodleigh and Remington loads are more than accurate enough for deer.

Elmer Keith really liked 53 gr 3031 and 405 jacketed. (I have never tried this load).
