Hello

I am just wondering if anyone has a recipe for 45-70 using 450 gr barnes. I have a brand new Marlin 1895. Any suggestions will be welcome.

Thank you

Since this is your very first post, it is too bad that no one has replied.
An answer would likely be, "Get a loading manual and look it up."
You would likely say that you can't find it in a manual, that is why you asked!
Experienced reloaders have often answerd such a question by giving great advice. Then, they read later where that person will say they never trust loading information they get on these postings. So why bother to give it out?
In your case, the info for the exact bullet may not be in any book you have looked at. An experienced reloader, in such a case, will just use information from a similar bullet, and allow for difference in weight. That is, if they found data for a 480 grain bullet, they would likely just use that information.
If they could only find information for a 405 grain bullet, they would use that as a guide, but start out lower than the starting load listed for the 405 grain bullet.
One thing about the Marlin 45-70. I don't think you will be shooting the higher powered loadings. They are just too uncomfortable to shoot. I have a LimbSaver on mine, which helps the shoulder, but I have loaded rounds, still well below full power loads with 420 grain bullets, and five shots will make my head ache. And I have been shooting high power rifles for a great many years!
Just yesterday I was at the range with loads consisting of 43 grains of IMR 4895 and the 420 grain cast bullets. This load is so low that it is likely not in any book. I was also shooting my 30-06 with factory loads, with an ordinary rubber recoil pad on the 30-06. The 30-06 was definetly easier to shoot, less recoil, than was the 45-70 with just 43 grains of 4895.
In answer to your question, if it were me, I would start with the 450 grain bullet with about 38 or 40 grains of 4895, and go from there. See how you like that charge, then adjust it.
