Hi everyone, I just purchased a Uberti 1885 High Wall chambered for 45-70 with the flip-up tang sight. I plan to use this rifle for some close and long range plinking. I'm interested in loading some 500gr Hornady FMJRN. My goal is to kick-up some dust at around 500-800 yards. My reloading manual dosent list this load, and I plan to buy the Hornady manual but havent got it yet. My question is this: is it safe to load this heavy bullet in the Uberti replica rifle I own, and if so, what is a safe starting load. Thanks.

Personally I would not know, I have only ever fired black and cast out of my 45/70's the highwalls and the Sharps.....

The expense of this project may not make it worthwhile as most long range work with the 45/70 is with slightly heavier and more pointed bullets such as the Creedmoor design, these bullets cost a fraction of the Hornady 500gr. solid.
Smokeless loads would prolly approximate Black Powder loads without the accuracy or the enjoyment.

The 45-70 is a bit light for long range shooting. The DCRA Black Powder guys shoot duplex loads, with gas check cast bullets and plenty of care. The 45-90 and 45-100 are going to give you better terminal velocity to have consistent accuracy.
Granted the 45-90 or 45-100 performed better at long distance, but the old 45-70 was very competitive for us with heavy bullets.
I loaded a 530 Redding or a 550 Brooks and a couple buddies used a 600 gr. Hoch with excellent results.

I like the sounds of this. I have the 45-70 and plan to use it, I just want to have some long range fun with a heavy load. What type of powder are you using to push those 530 and 600gr? Where can I order bullets such as this. I'm new to the 45-70 and looking to learn what I need to know to put this project together.

I use Unique with 12 grains under a 500 gr lead bullet. This performs well out to 500 yards. Haven't tried 1000 yet because waiting for new sites.

We cast our own boolits, but perhaps Ben can help you out in that department if you aren't set up for casting.
