45-70 B.P. loads

Earlier this year I bought a Pedersoli in a 45-70 and have been shooting a compressed black powder load using a powder trickler, a milk carton wad,and shooting a 535gr. lyman postel bullet cast from wheel weights. I have been getting very good results with this load . The only thing with shooting this way is that I have to constantly use a blow tube to control fouling .
Now normaly if I am getting good accuracy I don't mind this method. But when shooting a long range timed fire this year at a c.a.s. shoot I was unable to get all my shots off because I was spending half my time blowing down the barrel trying to keep the fouling soft in the 35c weather.
I am going to start expermenting with lube cookies,I use a 50-50 bees wax and crisco mix on my bullets so I think this should work for the cookies.
This will be put on above the wax wad and then I assume a shinny paper wad above the lube before seating the bullet.
Now my question is what is a good method of making these cookies,and what thickness should they be ?also interested in any pet loads any one has also........thanks
 
I pour the lube mix into very hot water so that it floats on the surface as a liquid. I let it cool to a solid then lift it out with a pancake flipper and let it dry on old newspaper. Finally punch out the discs as needed, using a shell. If you put a card wad on top of a lightly compressed powder charge, you can use the shell you are loading, as the punch if you don't resize the shells.
If you pour the melted lube into cold water, you get an incredible mess of lumps.
I would make the grease wads about 1/8" thick. I also don't think it will make much difference with having to blow down the barrel but it may or may not help your accuracy.

Here are some things that work for me: a) Swiss black powder b) do not compress, use a 4' drop tube c) don't use wheel weights for bpcr bullets use pure lead/tin 30-1 d) try different bullet designs to find one that has grooves that hold more lube e) try diff. grades of black powder to see which fouls least........the only time lube cookies help for me is when using paper patch bullets....you should be able to get away with 3 "huffs" down the barrel between shots!
 
I use a greese cookie, beeswax wad and lube from Paul Mathew's book on BPCR.
I don't have to use a blow tuube between shots, and after five, the fouling comes out soft. I use 65 grains of FFG.

Where can I get a copy of Bob Mathews book on BPCR?I do have SPG BP cartridge reloading primer by Mike Venturino & Steve Garbe, is this alot of the same info? It was also recommended that I don't use wheel weights. Living where I do I use what I can get ,what is so bad about using this? I am getting fairly decent accuracy with them.The other Question then would be a supplier for tin ? I do have a fair amount of pure lead that I use in my front stuffers.......TOM
 
I used 3 % tin and 3 % antimony in my Pedersoli,got them from a Foundry in Parksville.I think the problem with wheelweights is the difference in hardness from one to another.

Where have you been able to find Swiss BP? BP in general is getting really hard to find, and I've NEVER seen anyone shooting Swiss around here. Even the great BP gurus at Lock n Load tend to use Goex
 
Prosper: I got my last batch of Swiss from Hillfolk in Senlac, Sask., they go to the gunshows in Alta. during the Winter....I highly recommend them......other than that I think one would have to go down to the States to buy it!! I use 66grs Swiss 1 1/2 fg, and Chambers 555gr. Creedmore bullet and it just slams those 500m Rams down!! The new GOEX EXPRESS may give Swiss some competition but I haven't found any yet!! BPCR Silhouette shooters stateside almost all use Swiss BP. I don't know if I can give out phone # for Hillfolk as I don't want to be accused of promoting a non-sponser's product.
 
Who's Lock and Load and why are they gurus? Never heard of them, they can't be gettin' the word out, or more folks would be enjoying Black Powder cartridge!!
 
Lock n load are a shop here in Edmonton. The help maintain the historical arms society membership and Gennessee range here in Edmonton, and are pretty much the only place in town where one can find black powder. One of the fellows has quite the impressive collection of BP guns & flintlock muskets
