I would recommend ordering and reading most, if not all, of the books on BPCR and 45/70 shooting by Paul Matthews. I have most of the books, and they are a gold mine of information.
There is also a primer by Mike Venturino and Steve Garbe that is also excellent.
Be very careful of duplex (mixed) smokeless /black powder loads.
