I have about 150 cast 400 grainers for a 45-70.

I'm wondering if I should waste time loading them to shoot thru my '79 vintage Marlin 1895 with Micro Groove barrel.

I'm thinking the Micro Groove might lead up less than Ballard rifling.

any thoughts?

420's have worked fine in mine

Howdy, I have loaded cast 420's in my microgrove 45/70 marlin and they worked well, no real issue with leading but I did keep the velocity down under 1600fps. Accuracy was plenty good but I have not tried them on game yet.

RCBS 410gr FNGC work awesome in my microgrooved 1895. I only push them about 1400 - 1500 f/s to keep recoil acceptable.

and to keep leading to a minimum...

Try 48 grs H322 which is what I load my TC Contender carbine too.

You don't want to push these bullets to fast due to leading now if they were gas checked you can safely go to 55gr H322 with out a pressure problem...

While I shoot a Winchester, I have read a fair bit on the micro groove. What I've read leads me to believe, that for some at least, they shoot just fine. I'd try them myself.
I'd use a good lube, and keep velocities in the moderate range to start. 1600 to 1800fps.

The microgroove rifling works best with cast if the bullet is a good fit..ie: one or two thou. oversize....the only time we found a problem was when we tried a .429" dry moly bullet in a .444 microgroove Marlin. Problem was solved when we went to .430" and reg. lube, I think that the slippery moly lube was the culprit.

I've had good luck with them, as stated previously 1400-1600 fps and roll em around in an ice cream pail with some lee liquid alox even if they're lubed already .

Cast is the only way to go with the .45/70. I've found the micro-groove bores like about a .461 bullet, and can shoot quite well. The micro-groove bores aren't usually as smooth as a good cut rifle barrel, which I prefer.

micro groove works just fine, shoot some of the mild loads till you are used to your gun , it will stand powerfull enough loads that you may not want to fire them,, i shoot rcbs cast405s at 1600 fps, all the power i need from my guide gun, wade
