I have a bolt action Simese mauser with a very heavy barell. This will not be a hunting gun. I am looking for an accurate light load. I have shot some of the shells I load for my #3 Ruger. This is 50 gr of 3031 & a 405 cast. This is a stout load, more than I need to kill paper. I am thinking of 4759 (about 20gr) H & IMR 4198 (28-30) and 3031 (38-40). Any ideas on other "pet" loads or your opinions on my choice. All with 405 cast bullets. thanks AJ

with a 405 cast and 4759...start at 25gr. This gives you BP speeds...you can work up from there. I just use 25gr. Just a fun plinking load. with 3031...35-36 gr. gives you a BP load....better wear steel toes.
 
If you really want to just plink, cheaply, why don't you give Del Selin's in Vernon a call at 250-545 - 6413and get a couple of 45/70 to 45 long colt chamber adapters made up?
You can shoot those all day with zero recoil.
 
I also have a siamese mauser in 45.70 and my loads are with IMR 4759.
405 grains cast bullet best group is around 1.5"with 20.5 gr of powder
535 grains cast bullet best group is around 1.5" with 27.0 gr of powder
 
I've posted some of this info on another thread but here are some of the cast bullets I have access to from a friend locally. For the most part I just use cast for the lighter plinking type loads although I have used a limited number in heavier loads tests as well. Most of my light load shooting has been out of a Pedersoli Sharps and the heavier stuff I put through my Marlin 1895GS. For the heavier loads, cast and jacketed the two powders I use the most are IMR 3031 and IMR 4198. These loads are usually based on info from manuals applicable to the bullets being used. Light loads, the usual powders are the likes of IMR 4227 and Unique with a filler. I've also started trying out loads using Trailboss just to get away from fiddling around with fillers but the accuracy , so far, doesn't seem to be quite as good.

My pet target loads for my 1886 Winchester;

20.0 grs. SR 4759, Lyman 457383 385gr, no filler
" " , Lyman 457193 405gr, no filler
These were sized to .457 using Lyman Ideal graphite lube.
457383 was usually the more accurate bullet in my rifle frequently shooting into 1 1/2" at 100 yds using a tang sight, back when I had young eyes.
