How heavy a crimp should you put on a 45-70? The manufactured ammo looks to have a pretty heavy duty crimp.

Mine are heavy enough to see but not as heavy as the store bought ones.

I crimp mine all the way into the bottom of the lead bullet. I found I got better ignition and less debris left in the bore doing it that way.
I'm using mostly using Trail Boss and Varget with a 350 grain bullet.

If your looking for a "one size fits all" crimp for the 45-70 a very heavy crimp is what you want...will work best on light "plinker" loads and won't hurt a "thumper" load or for a SS rifle use . For "thumper" high pressure loads in a lever gun a bit of crimp is still needed to hold the boolits in place in the mag as well as give all that powder a chance to start it's work (altho this isn't as important as it is in a light load) . Heavy loads in a SS buffalo rifles can get away without any crimp but I still used the same heavy crimp I use in my lever guns just because that's where the die is set and I see no detriment to using them that way.
