Hi everybody

I m pretty green still so forgive me if my question sounds studied. :)
I m looking for factory ammo for my rolling block in .45/70 gov .
Any idea where i can get some online and if anyone else as one of those rifles what ammo do you recommend.

Any help much appreciated

thanks

Welcome Cami.. Fine choice of caliber., I guess youre living in some isolated area, otherwise Id say just buy some factory loads at youre local gun shop.
Any factory ammo will do.. to warm yourself up to the gun and see what it likes.

Keep the brass, and one day start reloading, thats when you find the 45-70 is worth keeping... its a nice shooting round with modest loads.

:agree:

I would just avoid Hornady Leverevolution 45-70 ammo (unless you plan on loading this specifically in the future). They have shorter cases to allow for a different ogive on the bullet compared to normal 45-70 cases.

Many of the sponsors up top carry factory 45-70 ammo and all are trusted retailers. SFRC is one of my favourites but since they are located in Ontario you will probably be better off ordering from someone more Westerly.

thanks guys for the great info.
special thanks to LUTNIT i almost bought exactly that ammo.
I will let you guys now how it goes.
Does any of you hunt with a rolling block?

so i bought some barnes 45/70 300 gr ammo.
Tried to find the cpu on it, had to call em up to get the info they told me its safe to shoot. they say its around 28000 psi so a 1000 below the recommended pressure.
I will shoot that and then start my first reload with BP.
What kind of bullet do you recommend for reloading and what BP should i use.
I m just getting started so have a lot of questions
What would be a good web site to go to get the right loading data.

Lyman makes a manual specific to black powder cartridge reloading. It's probably your best place to start. For load data it's in the name of the cartridge; 45-70. The original load was 45 calibre, 70 grains of black powder (ffg if memory serves), and a 405 grain cast lead bullets. To get 70 grains in you need a drop tube and sometimes a special compression die for your press. Loading it with 50 grains of black powder is probably a lot easier if you aren't trying to exactly duplicate the old load.

For projectiles I would cast pure lead bullets and use a black powder lube on them. If you buy cast bullets make sure it's a black powder lube and not a smokeless lube or else you can have leading issues.
