What are you shooting them out of? I'll assume a Marlin 1895

Lyman manual info for IMR 4198 with a 405gr softpoint out of a 24" barrel (for 1895 Marlin and 1886 Winchester)
Starting load - 37grs, 1513fps, C.U.P. 19,100
Max load - 41grs, 1661fps, C.U.P. 25,700

I've found the Lyman load data to be pretty tame but it's a good starting point.

Much appreciated!

I am using a Navy Arms Summit Frontier Carbine. Basically a LE No.3 reworked to eat and spit 45-70.

There is lots online, a good investment is a Lyman reloading manual, many loads listed for cast and jacketed.

Not quite relevant, but I personally tried 30 and 40gr of H4198 with the 405Gr Cam-pro, based on the Hodgdon.com data. 30gr is very pleasant to plink and is very accurate. 40gr is getting quite hard-recoil-wise.

Using H4198 with a medium cast LEE 340 grain RN FP powder coated bullet.
33.0-35.0 grains of H4198 is very pleasant. I am currently dropping 40 grains for a bit more velocity, but when I went to 45.0 grains it became unpleasant & the recoil was nasty.
I still cannot believe some recipes call for over 50 grains. Shoulder busters & flinch inducers. Yuck!

I'm just working up a load for my 1895 and so far, from 40 to 46gr at 2 gr increments, 44gr of 3031 with 405gr gc is my most accurate loading at 1544 fps average. 40 gr was meh, 42 gr was ok, and 46 gr started to open up. I have to build a set starting at 42 and going to 45 gr at 1gr increments next.

I use 50 grains of IMR 3031 behind a 405 grain jacketed soft point bullet in my Marlin 1895 Cowboy. Velocity is around 2,000 fps and is suitable for hunting any North American game.
