i took my 45-70 xlr to the range today, and shot a 1/2 in group at 100 yards with a 540 gr. cast bullet. its the load that garret recommends, and does it work. not bad recoil at all. i can see that this load of 40 gr. h322 is a thumper. its the best cast load i found in a 45-70 yet. i pretty much tried all cast weights.

Hello 458
Did you cast your boolits or buy'm?...If you cast then what mold did you use?

I like to run my boolits about the same speed as you run your 540 grainer's in my Marlin GG but using 350gr cast, being the little recoil "jamtart" that I am...:D
My groups aren't as good as yours either bring around 2"-3" @ 100 m...

I too use H322 for my Marlin 1895G. Heres a few that I've found shoot 1moa.

Win brass, trim 2.1,
CCI 200 LR Primers

Either 40-41 grains H322, 550 grain cast bullet is very accucate.

50gr H322, and 420 grain seems is another very accuacte load and kills bears very well!!

And 57gr H322, and a 350gr Hornady has been a long time killer of mine and also very accuacte. This one has deer, bear, moose, and one pesky racoon to it's credit!!:D

H322 is a pretty popular with the 45/70 as its not only accucate but also works well for a variety of different bullet weight as well as tempiture un-sesitive.

Cheers
