So I was browsing the hodgdon data center and noticed that for 350gr fp for the 1895 marlin they have the load starting at 47gr and max load is 50gr! for IMR 4198..Now my 7th ed. hornady reloading manual ends at 45.3gr for the 350gr fp. I fired off one at 45.3 today and now I loaded 2 more up at 45.8 by mistake, but with the additional data from hodgdon ... should I worry about going over 45.3gr by .5? I would like to go for the higher loads listed on the hodgdon data center, but am hesitant unless others have some feedback for me on this data. I am shooting a 1895gs.

I have the hordany 7th and 8th edition. I find that they tend to make the max less than what it actually is. Each and every gun is different. I have rounds I load that are way over max. ie 45 acp 230 gr hp with 8.5 gr 800x and mag primer. I have no signs of pressure. But it doesn't shoot well. a 7.5 gr dose is much better.

Same as my 338 win mag. One book (Speer) says 78 gr of RL 19 is max but I use much less powder as it shoots better and it gives the required power.

Go for an accurate load before power. It will serve you much better.

From August 2007, Handloader, article by Brian Pearce, testing all versions of Marlin 1895, 45-70.
In loads not to exceed 35,000 CUP.
350 grain Hornady flatpoint.
IMR 4198.
--------------46.0----1,987 fps.
--------------49.0----2,103 "
--------------52.0----2,196 "

I'm only copying from a magazine what someone else did.
You do what you want and what you feel is safe.

With the 45-70 I base top loadings on what I can stand, not on what the rifle can stand!

Sage advice right there! I used to run max loads in my guide gun. Then one day I was leaving the range with a headache from the recoil and I thought "They used to kill everything that walked north america with 400gr lead bullets at a supposed 1300fps. Why am I pushing 400gr jacketed bullets so fast?" Then I read an issue of Handloader were Mike V stated his favourite load for 405gr jacketed bullets was 46gr of IMR 3031. Been using that ever since and it has been accurate and deadly, plus I shoot a fair bit more now.
