I came across this in a 1978 Lee Handloader. 42.2gr of IMR 4350 Improved Military for a 450-500gr cast bullet. I know it is a slow burning powder but I have the supplies at hand. Any thoughts on this combination?

Cheers

Would think lighter weight bullets might not develop enough pressure for
a clean burn. Give it a try & report back.

Just about any powder can be used to make any bullet and case go BANG.

The issue is suitability.

4350 is a slow powder, whereas when I think 45/70 I am thinking 4198 or 3031 type speed.

You don't need a powder thrower. Just scoop the case full of 4350 and seat the bullet.

I've shot that exact same load through an old Sharps 45-70 I used to have. I had to use magnum primers with 3 grains of HS6 over them to get consistent ignition.

Mr Jack Stead out of Salmon Arm suggested the HS6, which he uses with his 577 Snider loads and black powder.

You will find recoil reasonable and velocities in the 1300 fps range. No screaming hell but it produces enough pressure to obdurate the lead bullet properly into the lands. Of course, if you're going to paper patch the bullets you won't have to worry about obduration.

I went with this load on the advice of the previous owner and of course added the HS6 and magnum primer on the advice of Jack Stead.

I now use magnum primers for everything.

You don't mention what you will be shooting it through.

I gave a couple of dozen of those loads to a young fellow last spring. He was short on cash as his wife had just delivered his third son. He loves to hunt bears and those slow, heavy bullets did the job very well.
