Picked up a bag of 450gr campro’s, which they list for .458 Socom. No 45-70 data on their site for this particular bullet, I have found some Lee 440 & 460gr and Lyman 450gr cast load data I’ll start with.

I’ve looked at a couple powder manufacturers load data ( IMR/Hodgdon, Alliant, Aacurate etc.) as well as a few bullet manufacturer’s sites looking for anything on 450gr projectiles and didn’t find much. Is there anywhere else I should be looking for load data, have a couple different Hornady manuals, Speer, Sierra, Lyman and only the Lyman Cast manual and the Lee get me in the ballpark. Or if you’ve used this bullet, feel free to chime in.

This will be used in a modern single shot, specifically a CVA scout. So I’m not concerned with using a pointed bullet as I’ll be single loading, will just be used for shooting steel out to 200m for now so not looking for hot loads. I’m looking to keep things in the 1400-1600fps range, nothing too punishing for starters.

Right, Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook 3rd edition lists .45-70 Ruger load data for their 451gr cast bullet. For example 2400 start load @25,100 psi / 1355 fps mv.

I always just used the equivalent/appropriate/most like hornady data for Campro in my .308 3006 and .223..
You can download the hornady app and pay for a single caliber load data which is around 1$
That was one of my first looks, I’ve got 3 different vol.’s of Hornady manuals. There isn’t any for a 450gr, same with the rest of my load manuals. I’m surprised actually there’s nothing outside of the cast data for a 450gr bullet.

Have the 4th edition and there’s loads for the trapdoor as well as No.1 that should get me started, have some of the listed powders to play with. The Lyman data is puts me in the fps range I want as well, just looking for other options powder wise basically.

The Lee has some 5744 recipes and I’ve got a couple lbs of it, was hoping to find a few other powders listed that I have that all pop up for the lower <400gr and 500gr loads.

I surprisingly have a few options in the cupboard that usually work in 45-70, have a bunch of Hornady 350gr bullets so not a big deal if I’m stuck with 5744 and imr4198, 3031, Rx7 and Varget.

Here is an AI answer

For a .45-70 Government load using a 450-grain bullet, the powder charge depends on your firearm type. Here are safe guidelines from reloading manuals:

1. Trapdoor Springfield Loads (Low Pressure - Max ~18,000 PSI)

Bullet: 450-grain lead (cast)

IMR 3031: 38.0 - 40.0 grains (~1,250 fps)

Reloder 7: 28.0 - 32.0 grains (~1,200 fps)

Trail Boss: 12.0 - 13.5 grains (~1,000 fps, mild cowboy load)

2. Lever-Action (Marlin 1895, Henry) Loads (Medium Pressure - Max ~40,000 PSI)

Bullet: 450-grain jacketed or hard-cast

IMR 4198: 38.0 - 42.0 grains (~1,600-1,800 fps)

H322: 46.0 - 50.0 grains (~1,750-1,850 fps)

Reloder 7: 40.0 - 45.0 grains (~1,650-1,850 fps)

3. Ruger No. 1 & Strong Action Loads (High Pressure - Max ~50,000 PSI)

Bullet: 450-grain jacketed or hard-cast

IMR 4198: 50.0 - 52.0 grains (~2,000 fps)

Reloder 7: 46.0 - 50.0 grains (~1,900-2,050 fps)

H322: 52.0 - 55.0 grains (~2,100 fps)
