I recently aquired an old, but excellent condition Lyman/Ideal bullet mold that drops a nominal 378g g/c round nose bullet. It is their part# 457483.
Surprisingly it doesn't show up in my 50th edition Lyman reloading manual or in my older Lyman 3rd edition Cast Bullet Handbook from 1980.
So I gather it must be an older obsolete mold.
I am loading 45-70 loads for new Miroku built 1886 45-70 lever.
I am curious if anyone has any experience with this bullet?

I don't plan to load hot as it will be for banging steel at the range.

I'll extrapolate data from the more common 400g or 405g bullets if no one has any experience with this bullet otherwise.

If anyone has specific loads for this bullet a PM would be appreciated.

This is the closest info I have, from the Lyman cast bullet handbook, 4th edition.
Not the exact same bullet but pretty darn close. Note that this is trapdoor info and Ruger No.1 info….
Sorry for the sideways pics???

Years back, when I first got started into reloading and casting, one of the first manuals I acquired was an old Lyman Handbook of Cast Bullets. The copyright on the inside of the front cover is 1958:). It's pretty tattered but I still refer to it on a regular basis for cast reload info. It does have .45-70 load listing using the #457483, 195gr., gas check. What powder are you planning on using? There are listings using;
-2400
-4227
-4759
-4198

I have on hand H322, Unique and about a half a pound of IMR 4198. Have lots of H322 and Unique. My master listing of Ideal bullets shows that #457483 is a 378g bullet, not a 195g bullet. Mine is a g/c bullet for sure.
Some of my reference groups the Marlin 1895 and Win 1886 45-70 in the same pressure category as each other where Hornady groups 1886 with Springfield trap door pressure max.
Not looking for hot loads in any case something to plink at 100-150 yards.

10-13 gr Unique will make for mild shooting loads.
Just be careful, and double check charges.
I have used Unique in my Pedersoli 1885, with well over a thousand cast bullets from 300-531gr out to 200m.
I'm usually in the 13-15gr Unique range.
Plain based lubed,gas checked lubed, and powder coated, all shot fine.(some better than others)

Granted, the book was published in 1958 but the weight they have listed for their Lyman #457483, GC is 395grs. The stats they have using the powders you've mentioned you have available are as follows;
- 4198....34.0 grs*....1785* F/Sec
- 4198....26.0 grs......1350 F/sec
-Unique..15.0 grs*....1545* F/sec
-Unique..11.0 grs......1150 F/sec
Hope this helps. Oh, the * in their manual indicate Maximum loads.
:cheers:

Do you use any wadding over the Unique powder charges? Seems older loading manuals recommended dacron wads, no mention in most cases in newer manuals.

No wadding.
If shooting for best accuracy I sometimes tip the barrel up to get powder settled to back of case before pulling the trigger.
I have not seen any real difference though between settled and unsettled groups, and think tipping up barrel just makes me think I have done something.;)
P.S.
I think making sure your bullet base is perfect(square to bore), clean and dry(no lube), does make a difference!
