45-70 powder selection opinion

Word of caution. I'd look deeply into pros and cons of putting molybdenum disulfide in the bores of your rifes. It was the rage several years ago in bench rest and other accuracy disciplines. Funny thing though, not so popular now and some have an almost religious aversion to it. Something about difficulty in getting the moly out of the barrel completely and a risk of corrosion. Just saying....

I will use moly on bolts and triggers but not in the bores of my toys.

powder coating is different than moly coating, totally different.

I use 4198 behind a 405 hard cast ( no gas check) at 1400 fps. It is accurate and a very hard bullet to stop. Rifle is a Remlin 1895. Leading is not an issue at this speed. I found the data in the Lyman manual for trap door Springfield.

Big heavy bullets at moderate velocity from a 45-70 levergun are the formula.
My deer loads are 430 grain hard cast over IMR3031.
First shot they drop like an anvil stone cold dead and with very little meat destruction.
Can't overload with IMR3031 and a big heavy bullet as the powder will fill the case before the powder charge reaches the point where excess pressures are generated.
