45-70 Primer Pocket Question

I have a Winchester 1885 High Wall inbound and have started collecting range brass

Picked up a 20 pieces of S&B

Had to push pretty hard with my hand de-primer to pop them out.

The edge of the primer pocket isn’t rolled..maybe it is beveled?

Will they accept primers without swagging?

Also...could any 45-70 folks advise which brass is the best/worst...

In my experience all S&B cases have needed the primer pocket reamed to insert new primers.

Run something along the inside of the pocket from inside towards the outside. If you feel a lip at the end then they're crimped. You can swage, use a reamer like the Lyman tools, use your deburring tool or a drill bit. I prefer the Lyman reamers myself.

Sellier bellot brass's pockets are tighter than any other.
Just use the resmer a bit to facilitate entry of new primers or buy s&b primers for those.

I swept the edge with a pick and there is no discernible “overhang”..

Waiting for my Caliber Conversion Kit from Dillon so I don’t want to play around test fitting primers until it gets here..

Will report back on the outcome...

I got the Lyman large reamer from Cabela's. Just give the pocket a nice touch to see a bit of a chamfer

I have read if you are shooting black powder cartridges the Winchester brass comes highly recommended , I use it for my 1884 Springfield Trapdoor reloads , for everything else 45-70 I use Starline mostly.
