Hi I am going to reload 325 grain cast with gas checks and 425 grain casts with gas checks. I am using Varget powder. i can t seem to find information with these weights in mind. I was wandering if anyone has loaded with varget with these weights and with casts? Can you use cast loading with cup and core and vise versa? This is for a 1895 Marlin Model336. And I would like to keep the pressures around 28000 cup. For the 425 grain Im thinking 49 grains of Varget and for the 325 Im clueless. Thank yo8u Ahead of time for any who can respond and to those who try...

Varget's a little on the slow side for this application IMHO. I'd suggest something more along the lines of 4198, 3031, or 322.

40 grains of H4198 or IMR 4198 worked very well for the 420 grain cast in a Marlin 45-70 guide gun. Velocity is 1630 fps and is plenty to take any game you get in your sights.
Varget is better suited to .308 sized cases.

my info shows 63grs of Varget and a 300gr. bullet for 2020fps and 23,800CUP and is listed under "Trapdoor loads", 50grs. of Varget and a 405gr cast=1718fps and 20,900Cup again in the Trapdoor section. As others have said, it's a bit slow for top performance, I'd save it for another cal. and get some AA2015 for top performing loads in the 45/70.

If you want a plinking load with heavy casts from 405-500 grain try IMR SR 4759 with a filler. Dam accurate in my 45-70 under a moa at 100 yards but very slow velocities, and you need to fill the case up so the burn rate is equal.
Good luck!

For lead bullets SR 4759 is my go to powder (blackpowder velocities) and for the the balls to the wall jacketed loads it is RL-7 hands down.
