45-70 Semi-Auto?

Hey all,
Just thought of this and since if a such thing exists I guessed it would have been classed as a sporting gun. Feel free to move if I am wrong.

Anyone ever heard of a such animal ? Pretty sure it does not exist, but it'd be pretty sick.

Hmmm, I think I once saw an AR 15 variant in 45-70. But I bet there are members that know more about this than me.

To clarify though, are you thinking auto as in a Browning BAR or a black rifle?

closest ive seen is the Ruger Deerfield carbine in .44 Rem Mag., based on the Mini-14 design.... but thats hardly a comparison to the .45-70.

Not in 45/70,but I did see a Browning BAR in 458 Win Mag.The fella who owned it said it worked good.

There are autoloaders set up for belted cartridges. Bet one in .450 Hornady would sell.

The deerfield worked well, but I would think for a semi auto 45-70, maybe a shotgun type design would be best, I wonder if something based on a semi auto .410 would work?

As much as I wish it would...i don't believe the semi .410 would work....410 press. around 12,000lup......45/70 as handloaded in the Marlin...43,000psi.=Kaboom.

Yes, that's what I meant.

I bet a heavier receiver and gas sytem based on a .410 would be just the ticket.

a semi auto .45-70 would be suitable for???

.45-70's in canada tend to be used for large and or dangerous game. semi-auto DG rifle? don;t have to be a PH in africa to see that's not a bright idea.

sounds like a fix to a problem that never existed....
