I have a Siamese Mauser that I converted to .45-70:
* 26 in. Bauska Barrel (cold blued)
* Walnut stock (completed semi inletted stock)
* Leupold Compact 4X scope

Current Load:
*350 gr Hornady R.N.
*60 gr H335 substitute (Higginson)
*2175 FPS

I haven't tried blackpowder in it as it wouldn't be allowed in BPCR. I may sell to help finance a BPCR rifle

Good load Alias, H-335 is a good powder for top end 45/70 loads, and not just the light bullets, top velocities with the heavy thumpers too! Siamese Mauser convert. 45/70......$350.....w/leu. scope...$500...sorry it's not more but, most shooters prefer the levers or single shots.IMHO.

That 'surplus' 335 - is that the 845 stuff or the 735? I use a lot fo the 735 in my guns - 1t's about 5% faster than 335, or about the same as 322. 62gr behind a 300 gr Remington is my Varmint load. Flat as a 17HMR ;)

I believe this was 845, which I think has been replaced by 735. I believe the 845 also 5% more powerfull.

Maybe I'll try some BP loads in the Mauser. I have some Swiss, Goex and Graf 2FG powder to try. Would like to grab some Postell bullets to try.

I'm guessing a BP load shoot shoot as well in the Siamese as a Sharps?

What kind of realistic 10-shot groups are BP .45-70 loads capable of?

I believe 3 & 5 shot groups are often "flukes", but it's hard to fluke an exceptional 10-shot group

Montana made Sharps are 11lbs or more with 30" or longer barrels, and very fine double set triggers, some have Badger barrels(cut rifled), so you would have to have all things workin' right to equal them. All manner of BPCR bullets avail. from MT Chambers including the 555gr. P.Jones Creedmore bullet.

Posting this on for Alias. I ran it through my photo software and tried to clean it up a bit. As I get more pictures will edit post to add them.

I'm not sure how much this really means regarding the question "What's this worth", but the only good Siamese Mauser that I know of will be going on the market soon at $800.00 with rings only. No Scope.
This one's a tack driver with 405s and just about as good with Hornaday 300s seated out....it has long throat. Wood and metal is vg, bore ex.

Thanks for the information.

I remember reading the article in American Rifleman that my dad used to subscribe to back in the late 70's sometime that started the conversion craze. It basically was a cheap mans .458 mag. and most conversions ran about 400 bucks which was about 1/2 the price of a .458 mag without the expensive brass. My dad tried to get the action but they were all sold out in about 2 weeks after the article was published, none to be had anywhere. I guess it was about the same up here in Canada. If you could find the actions they were going for 75 bucks each, can you imagine that today.

I am emabarrassed to say that a summer of farming got smack in the way of my project(s), stock is ordered, reciever sight is here on the desk and a pile of components are waiting for the chrony. I 'll be babbling about the project all winter and lord knows I'll be leaning heavy on the collective 45-70 experience of our CGN brethren.

Big thanks to you Rodagra for all the help you provided. How are plans coming for the Jet boat trip?
