I have a new Marlin/Remington SBL, I was wondering if it would be better to use a .457 or .459 size die when sizing my powder coated bullets. I'll probably go with Lee.

Thanks

Congrats on the new SBL. Great rifle and calibre. I picked mine up a few months ago. Most will recommend the larger .459 for the 45-70 without having slugged the barrel first to verify your actual bore size. You should "slug" your barrel then go up .001-002 from that size for your final sized projectiles. Powder coating would not affect the size decision.

I have tried .457 and .459 in my gbl and both shoot the same. My barrel slugged at .4565

Only place i know that sells .459 push through size die is Track Of The Wolf.

I'm still trying to find a size die in Canada. My local places don't have any. Is good to know that they both work the same for you. How is the accuracy?

Accuracy was inch at 50 yards for me, but i did give some to a fellow cgn to try and he shot 1/2 inch at 50 yards with different powder.

Bullet used was Lee 457-405f (mold drops them at .458 + powdercoat its about .461) sized to .459

Track of the worlf only charged $16 shipping ( 2 dies) which is very good coming from the US.

Save yourself some money and buy a lee push through die and open it up yourself. Very easy to do.

It is easy to do i agree, but in this case not finding one locally means getting it shipped. The .457 and .459 will cost the same.

Track of the wolf also sell .460 now.

1. Shoot lead bullets at higher velocity and avoid leading.
2. Cleaner shooting, less smoke than lube.
3. Cleaner barrel.
4. You dont need to worry how hard or soft the lead bullet is.
5. Looks nicer than plane old lead.

At the risk of sounding like an idiot, what is the purpose of powder coated bullets.
