My GG shoots the 405 Rem. extremely well with 51 1/2 grs of 3031. It's averageing about an inch, this is not a serious hunting gun for me just a fun one that could be used for camp defence or packing. Was out shooting some water filled juggs yesterday and realized the 405 at 1800 fps has some recoil. Anyone have a load for 3031 at about 15-1600 fps that shoots good?

I found in my bolt action .458 x 2 inch American, that 50 grains of IMR 3031 under the RN Remington 405's worked great.
Around an inch at 100yards. Sometimes under one inch.

A friend once suggested 47.0 grains of IMR 3031 is one load with 400-405s that was very accurate for him.

If you are getting 1800 with a 51.5 grs of 3031, I think that you would be close to the 15-1600 fps you want with 46 grs. The loading manuals aren't much help as they range from as little as 45 grs of 3031 to as much as 50 grs for 1600 fps with a jacketed 400-405 gr bullet. It seems to me that the accuracy of straight wall cases is not as critical to the amount of airspace in the case as is a bottle neck round, so the lighter load should still shoot well.

Thanks for the replys guys. The 1800 fps figure is a guess, I was useing 50 grs under the 400 Barnes and doing 1775 fps. Haven't chronoed this one yet. I'll load some lighter ones and give them a try. Oh ya, was out in the bush with it on the weekend doing some plinking and forgot to put the muffs on for one shot. Its ported, ouch.
