Hi guys,

I have some 340gr cast bullet for my 45-70 and I would like to use them mainly for plinking but might later try them for deer hunting. Don't want to use gas check for now as I will try to keep velocity under 1400/1500fps.

With IMR4198, and these 340gr cast, what load would you recommend. I was thinking working a load in between 32gr and 36gr to stay safe without using gascheck but don't have load data for these LEE 340gr cast bullets and not sure at what speed they would get out using these loads.

My gun is a Marlin model1895 so it can take more pressure and velocity but these bullets without GasCheck, I can't really push them to fast... or can I ?

Thanks to all...

Speer lists a Trapdoor Springfield Load of a 325 Flat Base (no gas check) Cast Bullet at 1562 - 1729 fps with 35-39 gr. of IMR 4198 . Can't see as the load you propose would be any trouble in your 1895 Marlin.

Try 55grs IMR 4831 (this will almost fill the case, compress powder by seating bullet but be sure you have the proper nose punch in the seating die, use LR or LR magnum primers. Load is extremely accurate in all 45-70s I have used, goes about 1200 fps, has low pressure. It also leaves a lot of unburned powder in the bore. Don't worry about that. Enjoy.

cast 45-70

I have a Marlin like yours and have tried the same thing as you. Found that my rifle shoots the gas check on the bullet better than the gas check left off. I tried Non gas check bullets and with a gas check with the same loads side by side. The gas check load shot better in every velocity range. But every gun is different. One of the powders I use is IMR 3031.
Carry on!

I ordered some Hornady gas check as well as a LEE bullet lube/sizer kit and will be able to test them with and without GC. I have micro-groove on my Marlin, not ballard rifling and am anxious to see the results. Some say it won't shoot cast bullets accurately, some say it's not bad, I will have to try and test by myself :D more shooting... .

opc x6, 303carbine, bboy,

I will give it a try when ready, thanks
