I have a few questions before I run out at buy my first 45/70. I would like to know can you shoot out to 200 yards with a 45/70? Next question is how reduced are the ballistics on the Marlin 1895 "guide" model vs the standard one with a 22 inch length barrel or the XLR can any one share a little info on it. Thank. J

With the guide gun you will loose about 100fps, gain alot of recoil, and noise, my pick would be the std. rifle or the XLR and heavy duty cast bullets from MT Chambers' supply.

This is what a Marlin 1895SS can do at 200 yards off the bench.

The load was a "hunting load" consisting of a 350 grain Hornady RN with an upper end load of Reloder 7

In all fairness, the Guide Gun was not made as a 200 yard gun. Sure, its capable, if you spend many many hours at the range getting to know ballistics for a particular load, and you have the marksmanship skills to do so with open sights. Most hunters simply do not have what is required to cleanly take game at 100 yards with open sights let alone 200.

Even if you mount an optic, the Guide Gun is still designed to work primarly as a deep cover gun. Im not saying it wont perfom at londer distances, but in the majority of circumstances, it is the shooter that is not prepared.

So, to answer your question, the .45-70 is VERY capable to cleanly take game at 200 yards regardless of what model you choose, providing you put in the practice and have the right sights to shoot at longer distances.

So after that all being said thanks everyone....does anyone know if the newer Marlin's 1895's are drilled and tapped from the factory?

Juban: The 45/70 is not really a club you can join..it is a state of mind....a euphoric state that is clear and relaxed, free from all the gun magazine hype that surrounds lesser rounds, unencumbered by thoughts of TSX, MSX,or other $2 bullets...you'll know you're there when you feel calm and at peace everytime you pick up the 45/70.
