Hi,
I'm wondering if there is anywhere in canda where i'd be able to buy a ~16" barrel blank in .45 ?
Preferably chambered in .45 acp, but if not no big deal as i understad no competent gunsmith would have a problem cutting a chamber for the .45acp.

This barrel would eventually be threaded for a small ring mauser action and use the "savage" style barrel nut for headspace adjusment.

Thanks in advance

okay so i have located a barrel now im wondering will they cut threads and make a savage style locknut so i can set the correct headspace myself? I assume so, i guess my best course of action would be to get in contact with them.

Strange you should mention it, but I'm currently in the process of ordering a 16" .45 ACP barrel for my savage bolt-action. We must think alike. I'm ordering mine through Mysticplayer, but I can get mine pre-chambered and threaded. Not sure about the threading for a mauser, but if the barrel dealer won't do it, then any competent smith can; it'll just cost a bit for the work. I'm planning on a .45 ACP scout rifle that I can use on big game (deer) at (very) short range and just plain fun. Plus, I can load those rounds up to way more oomph than with pistol pressures. Not a super practical rifle, but it should be fun.

Erik.

You have my attention.

What kind of project are you working on?

The rifle will be a turkish mauser converted to .45acp it will be a repeater as it makes no sense in my mind for this rifle to be single shot. The barrel i'd hope to be around 16" and i'd shorten the stock in the front quite a bit and try to figure out a folding mechanism for the butt if i can. My idea is a campinp/hiking beat around gun for targets of opportunity. I will be developing loads for this rifle, some under powered to make near silent loads (getting as much of the powder to burn up before the round leaves the bore, inspired by camp cook)
And some loading very hot as this action will be 2x-3x as strong as your average pistol.

One of the only main problems i forsee is the lack of an ejector. I figure that since the extractor will have no trouble moving that short litte .45 around maybe the upwards pressure from the next round in the mag will be enough to give it a little shove out of way.
OR if i just operate the bolt smartly it "should" toss the brass free.

What are you planning on using for mags, or are you just gonna make it single shot?

As for the mags 1991 .45acp mags will be the one's in question.
i will have a aluminum block cut to dimension to fill the old 8mm mag well and cut a slot into it at the correct angle for the .45 round to be lined up with action and bore. (i believe the angle is about ~15 degrees) from there i'd have to make an extension off the bottom of the original mag bottom plate in order to mount a mag catch/release.

Some years ago, in 2006 I think, an american, Mr Rhineland sold .45 ACP conversion kit for mauser 98 and Lee-Enfield. I remember seeing few on Ebay (when it was possible to buy cool stuf there). I think the kit was under $200 USD.

The Rhineland kit was a prechambered and threaded 16 in 45 barrel, a Savage style barrel nut and an aluminum adaptor going into the magazine, in the purpose to accept a stok 1911 pistol magazine. Also I remember that on his website he advised that the Lee Enfield was a better choice for his conversion than the 98.

Recently I look for his website but I think the men just is out of business.

I think it would be easier to modify the magwell of the mauser then the enfield to accept the 1911 mags. Although an enfield would be cool as well (delisle carbine anyone? google it if u've never heard of it)
Right now i'm trying to sort the barrel, who knows maybe if i get a couple confirmed orders ill get a few of the mag adaptors made up ?

Let me know. You can buy CM barrel blanks in various lengths and just cut up to the finished lenghts desired. Of course, short barrels would need to be manf per the laws of the land but it is possible.

As for prethreaded/chambered barrels, I am getting some Rem 700 barrel nuts shortly so you can play with these actions too.

Savage is a no brainer AND I can now offer barrels for the Marlin XR7.

Sorry but the Mauser/LE route is not so easy these days as the companies that used to make the parts are gone. IF you do use a Mauser, you will need to fabricate a longer ejector to knock out the case without using the full stroke of the action.

You could put in a bolt block so that you could have a short bolt throw and eject the case. There are still pics of the Rhineland and similar kits on the net to give you ideas.

Match quality CM blanks are not that expensive especially when you can get two shorties from one blank.
