The load data I have on hand shows little difference between the COL for 45 ACP 185gr JSWC and the 45 ACP 230 gr ball. Ball COL = 1.275 and JSWC = 1.275 in one manual and 1.268 in another.

By my logic, "somewhat flawed", the straight sided JSWC bullets should seat much deeper than the curved ball or else the JSWC bullet would be too close to the lands. This is evidently wrong. Can anyone explain this. Thanx
 
I'd be more concerned about how they feed than the lands. If it feeds well at 1.275 that's good, I've found I need to go down to 1.200 with swc to get reliable feeding with my glock. Of course, I'm using cheapo plated bullets, so it'd probably be less picky with higher quality Jacketted bullets. I load so there's just a touch of the straight wall sticking out the top, and put a pretty firm taper crimp after.

I agree with that. I have found that for my HK I have to seat much deeper than on my STI for 185 gr. JHP's. If I seat to the recommended COL they won't feed in my HK. Seating them deeper- end of problem.
 
Thanx guys. With some experimenting I've hit on 1.207" which seems to suit both my Kimber and Wilson 1911's. Now I'm more confident that this is the appropriate solution.
 
1.195" should be the JSWC COL. The 1.275 is for JHP in 185gr. From Hodgdon site and Reloader's Reference as well.
