45 ACP large primer vs small primer brass - my recent experience

I've been using a Norinco 1911 in 45 acp for PPC and 2-gun / 3-gun for a while now, and up until a month ago was only using large pistol primer brass with CCI or Winchester primers. Whether Titegroup, HP38, HS-6, TrailBoss, Unique, AA#7, etc if I did my job right (sufficient powder to work the slide) the ammo would work as expected. Projectiles are 200gr SWC or 200gr RNFP seated as per my Lee manual, using a Lee 4 die set on my Lee turret press.

Like many other people, I have been picking up small pistol primer brass found at the range, and put it in its own bin. Last month, I decided that for 2-gun and 3-gun matches where I don't get my brass back (easily) I would use this SPP brass and save the LPP brass for PPC shooting (where I do get my brass back).

I have found that certain powders, notably Unique, IMR PB, Bullseye, and AA#7 are very inconsistent with the small primer brass. To the point of hangfires (fraction of a second), small lit particulate ejecting from the barrel of my 45 (like I was firing my cap & ball revolver with black powder), and inconsistent recoil. Unique is the worst by far. I have tried CCI, Campro, and Winchester brand small pistol primers.

I loaded a batch of small pistol magnum primers (CCI) with the exact same powder load and, based on my small sample size (half a box of each powder), no longer had an issue with these powders.

I am assuming that some (most?) of the issue is the small amount of powder in the 45 acp case, and possibly the position of the powder within the case. I have not yet done the "test" of pointing the cartridge in different directions (up vs down) but suspect this would play a role. Obviously my pistol starts in my holster pointed down, then is horizontal for magazine changes.

So, having a few thousand 45 acp brass with small pistol primer pockets, what powder are others using successfully with regular (CCI, Winchester, or Remington) small pistol primers? My current plan is to use SPM with pretty much all of my small primer brass handloads.

Thanks

There is much more priming compound in a LP vs SP. You found your solution in using a magnum primer. I shoot all my loaded ammo mixed. Chronograph never seems to notice the difference between segregated and not. I use Red Dot though, it's not hard to light at all... Curious that Titegroup and Bullseye give you issues. I am guessing your loads are very light?

I use Titegroup in all my semiauto loads, staying near the middle of the road (neither min nor max charges, wanting the gun to cycle as-designed). With CCI small pistol primers in 9mm and 45acp-small-pocket, and Winchester large pistol primers in 45acp-large-pocket, I've never noticed any issues at all.

Brand choices mostly came of what was available back when I started needing those primer sizes, and staying with what had proven to work.

My only .45 ACP primer pocket preference is the wish they'd settled on just one or the other!

I did some accuracy testing a while back. There is a slight difference in accuracy, the LP having consistently better accuracy than the SP primers. I agree with Ganderite. If they are for plinking and I'm not worried about retrieving them for whatever reason, I use the SP primer.

Sorry if I wasn't clear. Haven't tried Titegroup with SPP (just LPP). I'm now out of Titegroup so trying to find a new "best load" and want to start using up SPP brass. Unique, IMR PB, Bullseye, and AA#7 were the ones I had at some issue with. Unique by far the most sensitive / problematic.

Loads are, according to my manuals, mid range. Learned early on that light loads in a 1911 are inconsistent for cycling so I try to stay in the middle.

Very interesting. I love Bullseye in .45 but I do load more towards max. I believe I use 5.5grns with a 230FMJ. Something like 925fps but I don't have my program available right now. I definitely do segregate my jacketed ammunition, SP of whatever I have on hand is usually used.

I have several times more SP brass than LP and I like saving my LP primers for magnum cartridges. I haven't used PB much but I would be inclined to recommend a magnum SP or LP if I had been giving advice ahead of time on this issue with your other powders if not loading near max.

I've personally never had any issues with Bullseye or titegroup with SPP in 45ACP but if you're looking for a sure fire powder IMR 700X or Dominion D700X from Canadaammo would be where I'd go next. I actually prefer 700X in 45ACP as it burns cleaner than the other two mentioned and much cleaner than UNIQUE.

I'm curious does the Canada Ammo Dominion D700x have the same metering properties as the IMR? I had issues with my RCBS uniflow with the IMR 700x.

It's identical. I won't speak for CanAm but the powders seem to just be bulk buys from the source. I am using D800X and D-4064SSC with great success. I don't think I ever used my RCBS thrower but I have loaded several thousand .38sp with Dillon's thrower and it metered more than adequately.

Thanks B . I still might grab some , price is attractive.

I also save my .45 small pistol primered brass to use in "Lost Brass Matches", I load both small & larger primered brass using W231 and notice virtually no difference between types of brass used.
