.45 ACP Mauser

Hmmm... In the second part of the article, there is a line that goes:
"...figure out how to shorten the bolt throw, without of course, cutting out a chunk of receiver (and bolt) and welding it back together."

Reminded me of "Gunsmithing", by Roy F. Dunlap, copyright 1950. It gives instructions (and pictures) on shortening an FN Mauser to accommodate the (shorter) 22-250. If one shortened the military Mauser featured in the article to 45 ACP length, the ugly thumb cut for stripper clip use would probably disappear completely, and the action would become VERY short. The original ejector would probably work more-or-less as is once the action was chopped.

The Dunlap piece ends with another interesting quote - "You can find a reason, rather than an excuse. for most custom metal work."

Now THAT would be a cool project, although definitely not for the faint of heart!
