I have been reloading for a while but just got a 1911A1 that I want to start reloading for. I am used to reloading for rifles. I got some Hornady 45ACP/AR/ WIN dies the Custom Grade New Dimension. This is a 3 die set. Seems pretty straight forward. However there are two seating stems included in the box one is a familliar conular (tapered) type for seating pointy (For lack of a better term) type bullets, and a Flat type seating stem, what is that used for? Is it for seating wadcutters or something to that affect? I have read the manual forwards and backwards and cant find a mention of it.

The flat seater is for HP's and flat points. I like loading with the flat stem because it does not allow the OAL to change even with bullets of different ogives.

I differ with the above.

If you use the flat seating plug on a lead hollow point, or a jacketed hollow point with a lead tip, you will flatten the tip of the bullet, and in turn, clog the hollow point.

Use the flat plug for wad cutter type bullets (either jacketed or lead) and use the tapered plug for everything else. It should approximate the profile of the typical 230 grain FMJ bullet, and will not deform the tip of any bullet with a rounded profile.
