got a question for you guys, im gunna be reloading for my .45 caliber pistol soon, but when it comes to shell holders/shell plates etc, they list .45 acp-win mag, and .45 auto rim, im hoping somebody can explain the difference, and which i might need, thanks

.45 Auto Rim uses a different (bigger) shell holder than .45ACP/Auto not sure about the .45 win mag...

.45AR has a rim just like the .45 colt or .44mag etc....

No it won't fit auto loaders chambered for 45acp.

The auto rim was designed to eliminate moon clips in revolvers that were chambered for the acp. Since revolvers headspaced on the rim or moon clip this is possible. Auto's headspace on the cartridge mouth so they have no provision for the rim.

A 45acp has no rim. It is a straight wall case & chambers on the front of the case mouth. That is what stops it going any further.

A 45 Auto Rim was designed from a 45acp to work in revolvers. It has a rim that is bigger than the case ( like a .38 Special ) and the rim stops it from going further into the cylinder.

So although the case bodies are the same size, one has a rim, one does not. Therefore different shell holders.

"....45 acp-win mag..." Aka. The .45 Win Mag. Introduced in 1979. It's a longer version of the ACP cartridge with a thicker rear case wall. It was a short lived cartridge(although it's still available) made for the Wildey semi-auto pistol. Used in the LAR Grizzly pistol too.
What dies and shell holder you need depends on what pistol you have. Assuming it's a regular 1911 type, you need dies and shell holder for the.45 ACP. Think carbide.

The Win Mag uses the same shell holder/plate as the ACP from some manufacturers. It does with Hornady, Lyman equipment, but not RCBS.

Just to give you and those who dont know about the 45 WinMag a better idea, this should help. A 45ACP is on the left, and the 45WinMag on the right. While they look pretty much identical in all aspects other than obvious case length, there a some very minimal dimensional differences with respect to the rim shoulder etc. etc.
Cheers:)

Hope this helps.

There are still a few Wildey's out there but they are pretty scarce. Almost as scarce as the ammo! There are lots of other choices out there now days in the way of Hand Cannons that were not commercially available when this caliber was introduced way back then:rolleyes:...
