Thanks

According to Fadala's 4th Ed. Blackpowder book, .50 and up is recommended for deer and larger game. I would think that means definitely more power for dangerous game like black bear. I'd say .50 or .54.

Check your provincial regs on smallest black powder caliber that can be used for big game. If they allow .45 cal, then use Thompson Centre "Maxi-Balls" or try the Lee R.E.A.L. conical bullet.

What you're looking for is a conical projectile of around 300 grains (the Maxi Ball is 320 grains). I would not recommend a round ball, but a 300+ grain conical should be adequate (it certainly would be considered adequate if you were using it in a 45-70, so why not a front-stuffer?)

My personal preference is .54 cal, but heavy conical bullets in .45 cal should work.

45 cal is minimum fer hunting in most areas in canada, but if fer danderous game or animals deer size or bigger, a larger calibre is reccomended 50 cal or bigger.
always use enough gun.

Opinions eh?

The new in-line M/L's in .45 caliber loaded to max....150 grains of Pyrodex.... with the proper Hornady saboted bullet will take any black bear walking on four feet. A poorly placed bullet in any of the big bangers is no consolation.

The efficiency of burning time depends of the barrel length in the black powder world. Over charging black powder in a rifle with a too short barrel does nothing. You just have to shoot over the surface of snow with such a rifle and you will see the unburned powder fell in it. Sabot bullets are almost all jacketed hollowpoint handgun bullets that are not ideal for hunting such as hard cast bullets are. To measure the knock out punch it is better to use the Taylor formula.

If you are looking to cast your own bullets, I think I have an RCBS mould for a .45 cal "Mini" style bullet--let me know if you are interested and I will dig it out. It is new, unused and I would need around $50.00, shipped for it.

HHmmm,45 caliber and 70 grains of powder...Naw if you ask in the hunting forum if a 45/70 can kill anything bigger than a rabbit you'll get a few opinions about it.
Especially if you use a heavy bullet like a conical instead of a round ball and 90 grains of powder.
My lyman blackpowder handbook shows a 265 grain conical with 90 grains at 1511 fps out of a 28 " barrel and 1341 foot lbs energy at the muzzle and 822 lbs at 100 yrds.
