I'm going to be loading for .45 colt for a Ruger Super Red Hawk and .45 acp for a HK USC. The projectiles I'm likely going to use will be 200gr cast for the colt and 230gr ball for the acp. Looking over the Hodgdon charts they offer quite a few options for the same powder to be used for both loads.

I'm looking to see if anyone has any experiance using Universal Clays from Hodgdon for the previous mention loads or for the following powders.

1. Universal Clays, Hodgdon
2. 800-X, IMR
3. SR4756, IMR
4. SR7625, IMR

I was in the same situation as you except i wanted powder for my .44 mag. was using bullseye for the .45 and I will say it was very good. 5 grains of bullseye will work in both guns but if you want hot loads in the .45 Colt I was told by the experts here to use a slower powder? Powder is relatively cheap so I have done as I was told and bought some alliant 2400. I cannot complain at all, and now I make 2 different loads for my .44 mag. Light plinking loads with bullseye and hot loads with the 2400.

For the .45 ACP I was using 5 grains of bullseye with 220 grain LSWC.

The powder lasts forever at that rate, and would make it worth buying a different powder for the .45 colt loads. If you are just shooting light loads than Im sure bullseye would be good.

I see Alliants site lists 6 grains of bullseye behind a 200 grian lead bullet for a light cowboy load and 7.5 grains for a hotter load using a LSWC.

I'm not set on using 1 powder for both loads, I just figured why not. I see your point, the grains per round will make a jar last quite a while. I'm not concerned with any hot loads for the .45 colt as the Ruger is a .454 model and i'll be using a completely different powder for the .454 loads.

I reload for both those Calibers, Toss up between universal Clays or SR7625 both will be good powders clean burning and economical to load.

IMR 800X is too slow for 45acp and would only be good for the Colt with heavy loads

IMR4756 is pretty good for both also, thou I've only loaded this powder for the 45 Colt. Fairly clean burning good mid range loads.

.45lc;
I began using Trail Boss when it first came out, amazing stuff....
Half the recoil for the same velocity....
Can't overload as a double charge will overflow the case....
I load this on my Dillon 650 without problems....
Trail Boss works very well in most of the "Cowboy Calibers" both rifle and pistol....

.45acp have loaded tens of thousands with Win 231 for years and years, my Dillon 1000 drops the powder very accurately
